Focal Point

Catalog number: 2015-0005

DESCRIPTION: “Focal Point” is an entirely spontaneous, improvisational composition. Between design layers I thought about what could come next as I made tools—silk screens and carved linoleum blocks—or mixed dye. But, once the tools and dye were in hand, the design took its own direction as soon as I began to make the first mark on the cloth. This is a fair description of most of my work. I complete a layer then consider what might come next. The difference in this case is that I worked fast enough and with a sufficiently quiet mind that planning didn’t get in the way of the composition taking on a life of its own. So, perhaps “Focal Point” is about soft focus, that kind of blurry view of the world seen through squinted eyes that shows us only enough detail to move a few steps forward at a time.
