van Gogh Bubbles #1

Catalog number: 2012-0009

DESCRIPTION: This work began as a large scale literal copy of a van Gogh painting rendered in thickened dye on cotton. The finished piece features segments of that original painting set against a heavily marked shibori background. The juxtaposition of the strongly marked -- almost scarred -- background against the colorful, exuberant painting fragments echoes the contrast in the artist's life between the beauty of his work and the emotional turmoil that characterized his life.
